Tood Marinovich was the first freshman to start a high school football game in Orange County. Despite throwing for nearly 4,400 yards and 34 touchdowns in his two years at Mater Dei, Marinovich transferred to Mission Viejo's Capistrano Valley High School due to his parents' divorce. Todd went on to star at USC and Los Angeles Raiders. Matt Leinart, who graduated from Mater Dei in 2001, won the Heisman Trophy three years later at USC. Colt Brennan was Matt Leinart's backup until Matt graduated in 2001, then went on to start his senior year in 2002. Colt was selected as a Heisman Finalists in 2006 and in 2007 this time finishing in third place behind Tim Tebow and Darren McFadden. Matt Barkley finished his Mater Dei career in 2008 as the all-time passing yardage leader in Orange County, surpassing the record set by Todd Marinovich in 1987. Barkley was a finalist for the Heisman in 2011 and is the leading candidate for the 2012 season at USC. Max Wittek was the backup Quarterback to Matt Barkley while he was a sophomore at Mater Dei and started two seasons. Wittek signed with USC in 2011 and redshirted his freshman year and will again backup Matt Barkley for one more year in 2012 before he gets a shot to compete for the starting job in 2013.
